Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what comes to mind when they hear the word 'community.' Write their ideas on the board. Explain that a community is a group of people who live, work, or play together in a shared space.
  • Video Viewing (7 mins)
Play the 'Communities for Kids' video. Encourage students to pay attention to the different types of communities Maggie belongs to.
  • Discussion (8 mins)
After the video, facilitate a class discussion about the different communities highlighted in the video. Focus on examples like family, school, neighborhood, city, state, and country.
  • Activity: My Community Map (15 mins)
Have students draw a map showing their different communities. They can draw their house (family community), their school (school community), their street (neighborhood), and a symbol for their city/town. Students should label each part of their map.
  • Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the key concepts of community, neighborhood, and citizen. Ask students to share one thing they learned about communities. Reiterate how they belong to many different communities.

Interactive Exercises

  • Community Circle
Have students sit in a circle. Start by saying, 'I am part of my family community.' The next student repeats what you said and adds another community they belong to, like 'I am part of my family community and my school community.' Continue around the circle, adding one community each time. This demonstrates how everyone belongs to many communities.
