Duration: 1:55
Watch on YouTube

Key Concepts

  • Rhyming words
  • Phonemic awareness (recognizing sounds in words)
  • The '-og' word family

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify words that rhyme with 'dog'.
  • Students will be able to recognize and say words belonging to the '-og' word family.
  • Students will be able to associate letters with sounds (e.g., 'd' makes the /d/ sound).

Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Greet students and introduce the topic: learning about words that sound alike and end with '-og'. Show the video. Explain that they will be learning a song about words that rhyme with each other.
  • Video Viewing (3 mins)
Play the "OG Song" video from TLC Phonics Program. Encourage students to listen carefully to the words in the song.
  • Word Identification (7 mins)
After the video, ask students to name the words they heard that ended with '-og'. Write the words (dog, hog, log, bog, fog, jog, clog, frog) on a whiteboard or large paper. Point to each word as you say it, emphasizing the '-og' sound. Practice saying each word together as a class.
  • Sound Association (5 mins)
Focus on the initial sounds of the words. Ask students what sound the letter 'd' makes in 'dog'. Repeat with other letters in the words (h, l, b, f, j, c, fr). Connect the sounds to the letters.
  • Rhyming Game (5 mins)
Play a simple rhyming game. Say a word (e.g., 'cat') and ask students if it rhymes with 'dog'. Repeat with rhyming and non-rhyming words. Gradually increase the difficulty.
  • Drawing Activity & Emergent Writing (5 mins)
Have students draw a picture of one of the '-og' words (e.g., a dog, a frog). Encourage them to try to write the word next to their picture, even if it's just attempting to write the letters.

Interactive Exercises

  • Word Sorting
Prepare cards with the '-og' words and other simple words. Have students sort the cards into two groups: words that rhyme with 'dog' and words that don't.
  • Act It Out
Call out the words and have students act them out. For example, pretend to be a dog, jog in place for jog, etc.

Discussion Questions

  • What sound do all the words in the song have at the end?
  • Can you think of any other words that rhyme with 'dog'?
