Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to recognize at least three sight words presented in the song.
- Students will be able to participate in choral recitation of the song.
- Students will be able to connect spoken sight words to their written form.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about reading and words. Ask them if they know any special words that we use a lot. Introduce the idea of sight words – words we learn to recognize quickly. Briefly explain that they will be learning some sight words through a fun song. - Watch the Video (5 mins)
Play the "The Sight Word Song" video for the students. Encourage them to listen carefully and try to sing along if they can. - Sight Word Review (10 mins)
After the video, write down a few of the sight words from the song on the board (e.g., 'the', 'and', 'a', 'I', 'to'). Say each word clearly and have the students repeat after you. Discuss what each word means. For example, 'the' is used before a noun. Show pictures relating to the words (e.g., a picture of an apple to relate to the word 'a'). - Interactive Activity (10 mins)
Sight Word Hop: Write the sight words on large pieces of paper and lay them on the floor. Call out a sight word, and have the students hop to the correct word. Alternatively, use flashcards. Show the flashcard and have the children say the sight word. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the sight words one last time. Ask students to share their favorite part of the song or activity. Encourage them to practice the sight words at home with their families.
