Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about the alphabet. Sing a simple, familiar version of the ABC song as a warm-up. Introduce the Beans N Frank 'ABC Song' video and explain that they will learn a new way to sing the ABCs. - Video Viewing (5 mins)
Play the Beans N Frank 'ABC Song' video for the students. Encourage them to listen and watch carefully. - Alphabet Song Practice (10 mins)
Play the first part of the video (the alphabetical listing) again. Encourage students to sing along with Beans N Frank. Pause the video after each letter to ask students to repeat. Focus on clear pronunciation. - Letter Sound and Word Association (10 mins)
Play the second part of the video (the rap portion). Pause after each letter and corresponding word (e.g., 'A is for Apple'). Have students repeat the letter, the phrase, and the word. Discuss what each object is (e.g., 'What is an Apple?') and what letter sound starts the word. - Alphabetical Order Activity (10 mins)
Use flashcards with uppercase and lowercase letters. Ask students to arrange the flashcards in alphabetical order. Provide assistance as needed. As they place each card, have them say the letter name and the sound it makes.
Interactive Exercises
- Letter Sound Game
Call out a letter sound (e.g., '/b/') and have students name a word that starts with that sound. Alternatively, show a picture of an object (e.g., a ball) and have them identify the first letter sound. - Alphabet Hopscotch
Create a hopscotch grid with letters written in each square. Have students hop through the grid, calling out the letter name as they land on it.
