Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking the students what they already know about reading. Ask them what words they already know how to read. Introduce the concept of 'jump out words' or sight words - words we see often and learn to recognize quickly. Explain that today they will learn some new jump out words through a fun song. - Video Viewing (5 mins)
Play the 'Sight Words | Sight Words Kindergarten | High Frequency Words | Popcorn Words | Jump Out Words' video by Jack Hartmann. Encourage the children to sing along and do the actions as they watch. - Word Practice (10 mins)
After watching the video, focus on 3-5 sight words from the song (e.g., 'the', 'and', 'you', 'of', 'to'). Write each word on a whiteboard or large paper. Say the word aloud, spell it out, and then say the word again. Have the students repeat after you. Discuss what each word means and use it in a simple sentence. - Movement Activity (5 mins)
Reinforce learning with a movement activity. For each chosen sight word, assign a different action (e.g., 'the' = clap, 'and' = jump, 'you' = stomp). Say the sight word and have the children perform the corresponding action. - Word Hunt (5 mins)
Provide students with simple books or printed materials. Have them search for the sight words they learned. When they find a word, they should point to it and say it aloud. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the sight words learned during the lesson. Sing the 'Jump Out Words' song again. Ask students which word was their favorite and why. Remind them to keep practicing their jump out words!
Interactive Exercises
- Sight Word Charades
Write the sight words on index cards. Have each student pick a card and act out the word without speaking. The other students have to guess the sight word. - Sight Word Bingo
Create bingo cards with the sight words. Call out the words and have the students mark them on their cards. The first student to get bingo wins!
