Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by introducing the 'Reading Machine' concept. Ask students if they've ever seen a machine that helps them learn. Explain that today, the video is their reading machine! - Video Viewing (10 mins)
Play the "The Reading Machine 2" video. Encourage students to sing along and repeat the letter sounds and words as they appear on the screen. - Letter Sound Practice (10 mins)
After the video, focus on 3-4 letters featured in the video (e.g., A, B, C). Show flashcards of the letters (both uppercase and lowercase). Have students say the letter name and then the sound it makes. Use actions/gestures to represent the sounds (e.g., pretend to bounce a ball for 'B'). - Word Building (10 mins)
Select a simple word from the video (or a simple CVC word like 'cat'). Write the letters on the board (or use letter magnets). Sound out each letter individually, then blend the sounds together to form the word. Have students repeat the word after you. - Rhyming Fun (5 mins)
Choose a word from the video, like 'cat'. Ask the children if they can think of any words that rhyme with 'cat'. Help them if needed and provide examples like 'hat' or 'mat'. Focus on the similar ending sound.
Interactive Exercises
- Letter Sound Bingo
Create simple bingo cards with pictures of objects that start with the letters taught in the lesson. Call out the letter sounds (e.g., "/b/ for ball!"). Students mark the picture if it starts with that sound. First to get bingo wins! - Letter Scavenger Hunt
Hide uppercase and lowercase letter flashcards around the room. Have students find the letters and say their names and sounds when they find them.
