Learning Objectives

- Students will be able to blend individual letter sounds together to form CVC words.
- Students will be able to read simple CVC words.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about letters and sounds. Briefly review some common letter sounds (e.g., 'A' says /a/, 'B' says /b/). Show a few examples of CVC words. - Step 1: Sounding Out Letters (10 mins)
Using CVC word cards (download from the provided link or create your own), show a card to the students. Point to each letter individually and have them say the sound it makes. Repeat this process slowly and clearly. - Step 2: Blending Sounds (10 mins)
After sounding out individual letters, guide students to blend the sounds together to form the whole word. Start slowly, emphasizing the transition between each sound. Example: C-A-T becomes /c/-/a/-/t/ which blends to "cat". - Step 3: Reading the Word (10 mins)
Once the students have blended the sounds, have them say the whole word clearly. Encourage repetition and practice with various CVC word cards. - Wrap-Up (5 mins)
Review the CVC words learned. Play a quick game where you say a CVC word and the students point to the corresponding card (if available) or write the word (if developmentally ready).
Interactive Exercises
- Sound Scramble
Give each student three letter cards (consonant, vowel, consonant). Have them arrange the cards to make different CVC words and then sound them out. - Word Bingo
Create bingo cards with CVC words. Call out letter sounds and have students mark the corresponding squares if they can blend them into a word on their card.
