- Introduction (5 mins)
Greet students and introduce the letter Y. Show them a large uppercase Y and lowercase y. Ask if anyone knows the letter. Tell them that today they will learn about the letter Y with a fun song! - Video Time (5 mins)
Play the ABCmouse.com 'The Letter Y Song' video. Encourage students to sing along and dance. - Discussion (5 mins)
After the video, ask students about the song. What words started with the letter Y? Who was Yogi? What color was Yolanda's bird? - Y Brainstorm (10 mins)
As a class, brainstorm words that start with the letter Y. Write them on the board or a large piece of paper. (Examples: yellow, yes, you, yogurt, yard, yawn, yummy). Encourage students to think of their own words. You may have to help them. Talk about the meaning of each word. Use pictures if necessary. - Y Craft (10 mins)
Provide each student with a large letter Y cut out of paper. Have them decorate the Y with yellow crayons, markers, or paint. They can also glue on pictures of things that start with the letter Y (yogurt containers, pictures of yards, etc.). - Y Song Repetition (5 mins)
Sing the 'The Letter Y Song' again, focusing on pronunciation and clear articulation. Encourage students to clap along and point to the letter Y (on the board or on their craft).
