Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking children what they already know about words. Ask if they know any words by heart, or if they know how to read. Explain that some words are sight words. These are words we learn to recognize quickly, without having to sound them out. Tell them we are going to learn some new sight words through a fun song! - Watch the Video (5 mins)
Play the Jack Hartmann "New Sight Words 2" video. Encourage the children to sing along, spell the words, and do the actions with Jack. - Word Wall Introduction (10 mins)
Write each of the 12 sight words on separate index cards in large, clear font. Introduce each word, emphasizing the spelling and pronunciation. Have the children repeat each word after you. Place the cards on a designated 'sight word wall' in the classroom. - Sight Word Charades (10 mins)
Divide the children into small groups. Give each group a set of the sight word cards. One child from each group picks a card and acts out the word (if possible) or spells it out for their group to guess. The first group to correctly identify the word gets a point. For words that can’t be easily acted out, focus on spelling and building the word with body movements (e.g., bending over for 'by'). - Sight Word Sentence Building (10 mins)
Provide each child with a blank piece of paper and crayons. Ask them to draw a picture and then write a sentence about their picture using at least one of the sight words from the word wall. Provide assistance as needed. - Review and Wrap-up (5 mins)
Replay the Jack Hartmann video. Ask the children to point to the sight words on the word wall as they appear in the song. Review the importance of learning sight words to become better readers.
Interactive Exercises
- Sight Word Hopscotch
Create a hopscotch grid with sight words in each square. Have the children hop to the correct sight word when you call it out. - Sight Word Bingo
Create bingo cards with the sight words. Call out the words and have the children mark them on their cards. The first to get bingo wins!
