Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students if they know what 'sight words' are. Explain that sight words are words we learn to recognize quickly, without having to sound them out. Tell them we're going to watch a fun video by Jack Hartmann to help us learn some new sight words.
  • Video Viewing (8 mins)
Play the Jack Hartmann Sight Words 9 video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuxSWR6O078). Encourage students to sing along and follow the spelling of the words.
  • Word Practice (7 mins)
After the video, review the sight words from the song (called, just, most, know, red, blue, yellow, day, away, look, jump, play). Write each word on a whiteboard or large paper. Point to each word, say it clearly, and have the students repeat it. Spell the word aloud together.
  • Interactive Game: Sight Word Find (5 mins)
Hide flashcards with the sight words around the room. Have students search for the flashcards. When they find one, they must say the word aloud. Alternatively, show pictures (e.g. red crayon for 'red'). Have them point to the corresponding sight word.
  • Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the sight words one last time, encouraging students to say them independently. Praise their efforts and tell them they did a great job learning new sight words!

Interactive Exercises

  • Sight Word Charades
Act out some of the sight words (jump, play, look). Have the other students guess the sight word you are acting out.
  • Color Sorting
Provide colored objects (red blocks, blue crayons, yellow paper). Have children label each pile with the corresponding sight word card (red, blue, yellow).
