Key Concepts

  • An adjective is a word that describes a noun.
  • Nouns are people, places, or things.
  • Adjectives help make our speaking and writing more interesting.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to define an adjective as a describing word.
  • Students will be able to identify adjectives in simple sentences.
  • Students will be able to use adjectives to describe familiar nouns.

Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Greet students and introduce the topic: words that help us describe things! Ask them what their favorite toy is and what it looks like. Briefly explain that today, they will learn about words called adjectives, which help them describe things even better.
  • Watch the Video (5 mins)
Play the 'What is an Adjective' video by Jack Hartmann. Encourage students to sing along and dance.
  • Discussion (5 mins)
After the video, ask students what they learned about adjectives. Reinforce that adjectives are describing words. Review the examples from the song: good mommy, new school, fast boat.
  • Adjective Hunt (10 mins)
Have students look around the classroom and find objects. For each object, guide them to describe it using adjectives. For example: 'I see a blue chair.' (blue is the adjective). Encourage them to think of multiple adjectives for each object (e.g., big, brown table).
  • Describing Game (10 mins)
Play a simple describing game. Describe a student, object, or animal using adjectives (e.g., 'I see someone with blonde hair and a happy face'). Have students guess who or what you are describing. Then, let students take turns describing and guessing.
  • Wrap Up (5 mins)
Review what an adjective is. Ask students to give examples of adjectives they learned today. Praise their participation and understanding.

Interactive Exercises

  • Adjective Charades
Write down adjectives on slips of paper (e.g., happy, sad, silly, tall, short). Have students pick a slip and act out the adjective without speaking. The other students guess the adjective.
  • Draw and Describe
Have students draw a picture of their favorite animal. Then, help them write (or dictate) a sentence describing their animal using adjectives (e.g., 'My dog is fluffy and brown.').
