Begin by greeting the students and reviewing previously learned letters. Ask if anyone knows what letter they will be learning today. Introduce the letter W and its sound. Show a picture of a walrus to connect the letter to a familiar object. (PK.4.R.3) - Video Viewing (3 mins)
Play the 'Write the Letter W - ABC Writing for Kids - Alphabet Handwriting' video by 123ABCtv. Encourage students to watch carefully and listen to the instructions on how to write the uppercase and lowercase W. - Uppercase W Practice (7 mins)
Guide students in writing the uppercase W. Follow the instructions from the video: start at the top, diagonal line down, diagonal line up, diagonal line down, diagonal line up. Have students practice writing the uppercase W in the air with their fingers, on a whiteboard, or on paper. Provide individual assistance as needed. (PK.2.PC.6) - Lowercase w Practice (7 mins)
Guide students in writing the lowercase w. Follow the instructions from the video: start in the middle, diagonal line down, diagonal line up, diagonal line down, diagonal line up. Have students practice writing the lowercase w in the air with their fingers, on a whiteboard, or on paper. Provide individual assistance as needed. Provide students with a walrus template or have them draw their own. Have them write uppercase and lowercase Ws on their walrus drawing. This reinforces letter recognition and formation while adding a creative element. (PK.8.W)
