Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking children if they know what vowels are. Quickly review the vowels (A, E, I, O, U). Tell them that today they will learn about how the letter 'O' can say its name in a word. Introduce the YouTube video 'Long Vowel O Vowel Consonant Vowel, Beginning Readers Grammar Phonics Lesson' by FirstStepReading. Explain that Teacher Heather will teach them about the long 'O' sound using the Vowel Consonant Vowel Pattern. - Video Viewing (5 mins)
Play the YouTube video. Encourage the children to listen carefully to Teacher Heather and repeat the words and the Vowel Consonant Vowel song. - Discussion (5 mins)
After watching the video, ask the children what they learned about the letter 'O' and its sound. Ask about the Vowel Consonant Vowel song. Review what a Vowel Consonant Vowel means. - Interactive Word Practice (10 mins)
Write the word 'note' on the board. Point out the 'O' in the word and ask what sound it makes (the long 'O' sound). Explain how the 'E' at the end is silent. Ask students what sound the letter 'N' makes, and 'T'. Repeat the sounds of each letter and have them blend to make the word 'note'. Do other words that follow the Vowel Consonant Vowel pattern like 'oat'. - Activity: Matching Game (10 mins)
Prepare cards with pictures of objects that have a long 'O' sound with the Vowel Consonant Vowel pattern (e.g., a picture of a nose, a picture of a robe). Prepare matching cards with the words written on them (e.g., nose, robe). Have the children match the picture cards with the corresponding word cards. - Wrap Up (5 mins)
Review what they have learned today. Remind them that when they see the pattern Vowel Consonant Vowel in a word, the first vowel says its name, and the second vowel is silent.
Interactive Exercises
- Word Building
Provide letter cards (N, O, T, E, C, O, N, E) and guide students to build the word 'note' and 'cone'. - Sound Sorting
Prepare picture cards of objects. Some with long 'O' sounds (Vowel Consonant Vowel) and some with other sounds. Have the children sort the pictures into two groups: words that sound like 'O' says its name, and words that do not.
