Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Greet students and introduce the letter of the day: Q! Ask if anyone knows any words that start with Q. Show them the uppercase and lowercase Q on a whiteboard or chart. Briefly discuss that Q usually has a 'u' after it. - Sesame Street Video (5 mins)
Play the Sesame Street: Quincy's Letter Q Song video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gik6uAIDBB8). Tell students to pay attention to the words that start with the letter Q. - Discussion (5 mins)
After the video, ask students about the story. What was Quincy doing? What kind of bird did he find? What happened to the bird family? - Vocabulary Exploration (10 mins)
Introduce and explain the vocabulary words: 'Quail' (a type of bird), 'Quest' (a journey or search), 'Quilt' (a warm blanket), and 'Quince' (a type of fruit). Use pictures or real objects if available. Have the children repeat each word after you. - Activity: Q is for Quail Coloring (10 mins)
Distribute coloring pages featuring a quail. Have students color the quail and write (or attempt to write) the letter Q and the word 'Quail' on the page. Help them as needed. - Wrap Up (5 mins)
Review the letter Q and the vocabulary words. Ask students to share what they learned today. Congratulate them on their 'Q' quest!
Interactive Exercises
- Q Sound Scavenger Hunt
Look around the classroom and see if you can find anything that sounds like it starts with the letter Q (This will likely be a theoretical excercise, given the rarity of 'Q' words. Instead, focus on the sound and brainstorming.) - Quail Puppet Show
Provide simple materials (paper bags, markers, feathers) and let the kids create their own quail puppets. They can then use these puppets to act out the events of the story.
