Key Concepts

  • Phoneme blending
  • Word families
  • The -AT sound

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to blend the sounds of 'a' and 't' to form the '-at' sound.
  • Students will be able to identify and read simple words ending in '-at'.
  • Students will be able to associate letters with their corresponding sounds (specifically 'a', 't', 'm', 's', 'r', 'b', 'c', 'p').

Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by introducing the concept of sounds that letters make. Explain that we can put sounds together to make words, just like the video shows. Show the Hooked on Phonics video.
  • Sound Blending Practice (10 mins)
Practice blending the 'a' and 't' sounds together as demonstrated in the video. Have the students repeat the sounds after you, gradually speeding up the blending: A-T, A-T, AT. Use hand motions to show moving from one sound to the next.
  • -AT Word Building (10 mins)
Introduce the other consonants (m, s, r, b, c, p) and explain that we can add these in front of 'at' to make new words. Write 'mat' on a whiteboard or large piece of paper. Sound out each letter and then blend the sounds together to read the word. Repeat this process with 'sat,' 'rat,' 'bat,' 'cat,' and 'pat'.
  • Reading Practice (10 mins)
Show the words 'mat,' 'sat,' 'rat,' 'bat,' 'cat,' and 'pat' one at a time. Have the students try to read each word. Provide assistance as needed. You can also use picture cards for each word as a visual aid.
  • Review and Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the -AT word family. Ask students to name other words that rhyme with 'cat'. Play a rhyming game where you say a word and they have to say another word that rhymes with 'cat'.

Interactive Exercises

  • Sound Matching Game
Prepare cards with the letters 'a', 't', 'm', 's', 'r', 'b', 'c', 'p'. Show each card and have the students say the sound it makes. Then, have them find the 'a' and 't' cards and blend them together to make the '-at' sound.
  • Word Building with Blocks
Use building blocks with letters written on them. Have students use the blocks to build the -at words (mat, sat, rat, bat, cat, pat).

Discussion Questions
