Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about letters and sounds. Introduce the concept of letter blends as two letters that make a combined sound. Tell them they will watch a video to learn more. - Video Viewing (10 mins)
Play the VideoSmarts Letter Blends Part 1 video. Encourage students to pay attention to how the sounds of the letters are blended together. - Blend Practice (10 mins)
After the video, focus on the blends introduced (bl, pl, cr, tr). Say each blend clearly and have the children repeat it. List a few words with each blend, emphasizing the initial sound. - Game Time! (10 mins)
Play a 'Blend It' game. Say a blend (e.g., 'bl') and have the children think of and shout out words that start with that blend (e.g., blue, block, black). Alternatively, show pictures and have the children identify the blend that begins the word. - Creative Expression (5 mins)
Have each child pick one of the blends learned and draw a picture of something that starts with that blend. Encourage them to label their picture with the blend or even attempt the whole word with assistance.
Interactive Exercises
- Blend Sound Match
Write the letter blends on flashcards and pictures of words that start with those blends on separate cards. Have students match the blend card to the picture card. - Blend Hop
Create a grid on the floor with each square containing a letter blend. Call out a word, and the students have to hop to the square with the corresponding letter blend.
