Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students if they know what sounds the letters 't' and 'h' make separately. Show them the letters 't' and 'h' written on the board. Tell them that today they will learn what sound these letters make when they are together. - Video Time! (5 mins)
Watch the "Digraph 'th' | by Phonics Stories™" video together. Remind students to listen carefully to how the letters 't' and 'h' sound when they are together. - Discuss the Story (5 mins)
After the video, ask students what sound T and H made when they were together. Emphasize that 't' and 'h' make the /th/ sound, like in 'thunder'. - /th/ Word Practice (10 mins)
Introduce a few simple words that start with 'th', such as 'thin', 'thick', 'them', 'this', and 'then'. Say each word clearly and have the students repeat after you. Use visual aids (pictures) to help them understand the meaning of the words. - Interactive Game: /th/ Sound Hunt! (10 mins)
Hide pictures of objects around the room, some that start with 'th' (e.g., thumb, thread, throne) and some that don't (e.g., cat, dog, sun). Have students search for the pictures. When they find a picture, they bring it to you. If it starts with the /th/ sound, they put it in the 'th' pile. If it doesn't, they put it in the 'not th' pile.
Interactive Exercises
- /th/ Sound Hop!
Draw large circles on the floor. In some circles, write words that start with 'th', and in others, write words that don't. Call out a word. If the word starts with 'th', the students hop to a circle with a 'th' word. If it doesn't, they stay where they are.
