  • Phonics (Beginning Letter Sounds)

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to sing the ABC song.
  • Students will be able to identify at least 5 uppercase and 5 lowercase letters.
  • Students will begin to associate letters with their corresponding sounds.

Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Greet the students and introduce the topic: learning the alphabet. Ask if anyone knows the ABC song. Explain that you're going to watch a fun video with Mister B to help them learn!
  • Video Viewing (3 mins)
Play the 'ABC song' video from Mister B. Encourage the students to sing along and point to the letters as they appear on the screen.
  • Letter Recognition Activity (7 mins)
After the video, write uppercase and lowercase letters on the board. Point to each letter and ask the students to name it. If they struggle, sing the part of the ABC song where that letter appears. Then, have the students take turns coming to the board and identifying letters.
  • Phonics Introduction (5 mins)
Choose 2-3 letters (e.g., A, B, C). Say the letter and then say a word that starts with that letter (e.g., 'A is for Apple,' 'B is for Ball,' 'C is for Cat'). Have the students repeat the letter and the word.
  • Review and Closing (5 mins)
Sing the ABC song one more time as a class. Remind the students to practice their letters at home. Give them a small worksheet with the letters A, B, and C to color and practice writing (if developmentally appropriate).

Interactive Exercises

  • Letter Matching Game
Prepare flashcards with uppercase and lowercase letters. Have the students match the uppercase letter to its lowercase counterpart.
  • Letter Sound Game
Say a letter sound and have the students identify the letter that makes that sound (e.g., 'What letter says /b/?' - Student answers 'B').
