A-B-C! Learning Vowels and Consonants with KLT!
Lesson Description
Video Resource
Key Concepts
- Vowels are special letters: A, E, I, O, U (and sometimes Y!)
- Consonants are all the other letters in the alphabet.
- Letters make sounds that help us read and write.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify vowels (A, E, I, O, U) in the alphabet.
- Students will be able to differentiate between vowels and consonants.
- Students will be able to sing along with the vowel and consonant song.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking the children what they already know about the alphabet. Show them an alphabet chart. Ask if they know what vowels are. Tell them we are going to watch a fun video to learn more! - Video Time! (5 mins)
Play the KLT 'Consonants and Vowels' video. Encourage the children to sing along and dance! - Vowel Circle (10 mins)
Write the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) on separate pieces of paper. Place the papers in a circle on the floor. Play music and have the children walk around the circle. When the music stops, they stand on a vowel. Ask each child to name the vowel they are standing on and say a word that starts with that vowel (e.g., A - apple, E - elephant). Give examples if needed. - Consonant Hunt (10 mins)
Hide consonant letter cards around the room. Have the children find the consonant cards. Once they find a card, have them bring it to you and say the name of the letter. As a group, try to think of a word that starts with that consonant. Discuss how different the vowels and consonants are. - Worksheet Activity (10 mins)
Provide a simple worksheet with pictures. For each picture, have the children circle whether the first letter of the word is a vowel or a consonant (provide pictures for the letters). Help them as needed. - Wrap Up (5 mins)
Sing the KLT song again! Review what they learned about vowels and consonants. Praise their hard work.
Interactive Exercises
- Vowel Sorting
Provide a set of letter cards (vowels and consonants). Have students sort the cards into two groups: vowels and consonants. - Sound It Out
Show pictures of simple objects (e.g., cat, dog, sun). Help students identify the first letter of the word and determine if it's a vowel or a consonant.
