Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Greet the students and introduce the topic: letters! Ask if they know their ABCs. Tell them you're going to watch a fun video with Lotty Learns to learn about special letters called vowels and consonants. - Video Viewing (7 mins)
Play the 'Vowel Sounds | Vowels and Consonants | ABC Phonics for kids!' video by Lotty Learns. Encourage students to watch attentively and listen for the vowels and consonants. - Vowel and Consonant Sort (10 mins)
Prepare large index cards with uppercase and lowercase letters (A-Z). As a class, sort the letters into two groups: Vowels and Consonants. Reinforce that A, E, I, O, U are vowels and all the others are consonants. - Vowel Sound Practice (10 mins)
Focus on vowel sounds. For each vowel (A, E, I, O, U), say the short sound (as in apple, egg, igloo, octopus, umbrella). Then, say the long sound (same as the letter name). Use picture cards of objects that begin with each vowel sound (e.g., apple, ape, egg, eagle, igloo, ice, octopus, oval, umbrella, unicorn). - Activity Worksheet (10 minutes)
Distribute worksheets that have matching activities such as connect the vowel to an image. For example, 'A' to an image of 'Apple'. - Wrap Up (3 mins)
Review what they learned. Ask them to name the vowels. Ask them to say a word that starts with a vowel. Praise their effort and participation.
Interactive Exercises
- Vowel Hunt
Hide vowel letter cards around the room. Have the children find them and shout out the letter and its sound when they find one. - Consonant Clap
Say a word. If it starts with a consonant, have the children clap once. If it starts with a vowel, have them stand still.
