- Introduction (5 mins)
Greet students and introduce the topic of blends. Ask if they know what a blend is. Explain that a blend is when two letters come together at the beginning of a word and each letter makes a sound. - Video Time! (5 mins)
Play the Jack Hartmann video: 'What Is a Blend? | bl, cl, gl, sl'. Encourage students to sing along and pay attention to the blends and words used in the song. - Blend Brainstorm (10 mins)
After the video, review each blend (bl, cl, gl, sl) discussed in the song. For each blend, ask students to name other words that begin with that blend. Write the words on a whiteboard or chart paper. - Blend Picture Match (10 mins)
Prepare cards with pictures of items that start with the target blends (e.g., blue, clock, glass, slide). Also prepare cards with the blend written on them (bl, cl, gl, sl). Have students match the picture cards to the corresponding blend card. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the blends and words learned. Sing the blend song one more time. Encourage students to listen for blends in words they hear throughout the day.
