Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify and pronounce simple consonant blends such as 'sk' and 'dr'.
- Students will be able to differentiate between individual letter sounds and blended sounds.
- Students will actively participate in singing and movement activities related to phonics.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Greet the students and introduce the topic: learning about sounds letters make when they are together. Ask them if they have ever heard two letters make one sound. Briefly explain the concept of blends and digraphs in a simple way, using examples like 'sh' or 'st'. Tell them they will be learning with a fun song by MiSTER B! - Video Time! (5 mins)
Play the 'Blend Them Up' video. Encourage students to listen carefully and watch the actions. After the first play, ask them what sounds they heard. - Sing and Move (10 mins)
Play the video again. This time, encourage students to sing along and do the actions shown in the video or create their own movements for each blend/digraph. Pause the video after each blend/digraph to emphasize the sound. - Sound Sort (10 mins)
Prepare flashcards with pictures representing words that start with the blends/digraphs from the song (e.g., skate for 'sk', dress for 'dr'). Have students sort the flashcards into groups based on the initial blend/digraph sound. Guide them and provide assistance as needed. - Blend Building (10 mins)
Write the blends/digraphs (sk, dr) on the board. Give students letter tiles or magnetic letters. Have them build the blends on a table or whiteboard. Say the blend together as a class. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Sing the song one last time. Review the blends/digraphs learned. Ask students what their favorite blend/digraph is and why.
Interactive Exercises
- Sound Charades
Act out words that start with the blends/digraphs. For example, act like you are ice skating for 'sk' or put on a dress for 'dr'. Students guess the word and the blend/digraph. - Blend Hop
Create squares on the floor with the blends/digraphs written on them. Call out a word that starts with one of the blends/digraphs. Students hop to the correct square.
