Key Concepts
- Vowels (A, E, I, O, U)
- Long vowel sounds
- Association of long vowel sounds with words
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify the five vowels (A, E, I, O, U).
- Students will be able to produce the long vowel sounds.
- Students will be able to associate long vowel sounds with corresponding example words (acorn, eagle, ice, oval, unicorn).
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about letters. Ask if anyone knows the vowels. Introduce the concept of vowels as special letters that make different sounds. - Video Time (5 mins)
Play the Jack Hartmann video: 'These Are the Long Vowel Sounds'. Encourage students to sing along and dance. Point out the visuals of the letters and the example words. - Vowel Review (5 mins)
After the video, write the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) on the board. Say each vowel and have the students repeat after you. Emphasize the long vowel sound for each. - Word Association Game (10 mins)
Show pictures of 'acorn', 'eagle', 'ice', 'oval', and 'unicorn'. Ask the children which vowel sound they hear at the beginning of each word. Have them repeat the word and the vowel sound. You can also show pictures of other objects and ask the students to identify the long vowel sound if there is one. For example, if you show a picture of 'ant', ask 'Is this a long vowel sound?' - Activity Worksheet (10 mins)
Distribute an activity worksheet where students match the vowel to a picture of a word that starts with that long vowel sound. The worksheet should feature simple drawings of acorn, eagle, ice, oval and unicorn.
Interactive Exercises
- Vowel Sound Charades
Give each student a card with either a vowel (A, E, I, O, U) or an object (acorn, eagle, ice, oval, unicorn). If they have a vowel, they make the long vowel sound. If they have an object, they act it out. The rest of the class guesses which vowel sound it is related to.
