Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Greet the students and introduce the concept of sight words. Explain that sight words are words we see often and learn to read quickly. Ask if anyone knows any sight words already. Play the Jack Hartmann sight words song. - Video Viewing (5 mins)
Play the Jack Hartmann sight words video. Encourage students to sing along and follow the words on the screen. - Word Practice (10 mins)
Focus on 3-4 sight words from the video (e.g., 'an', 'at', 'be', 'we'). Write each word on a whiteboard or large paper. Say the word aloud and have the students repeat. Point to each letter in the word as you say it. Have students clap or jump each time they say the word. - Interactive Game (10 mins)
Play a simple game to reinforce sight word recognition. For example, create flashcards with the target sight words. Show each card and have the students say the word. If they say it correctly, they get to do a fun action (e.g., hop like a bunny, roar like a lion). - Creative Expression (5 mins)
Have students draw a picture related to one of the sight words they learned. For example, if they learned 'we', they could draw a picture of themselves with a friend or family member. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the sight words learned during the lesson. Sing the Jack Hartmann sight words song again. Encourage students to practice their sight words at home with their families.
Interactive Exercises
- Sight Word Hopscotch
Create a hopscotch grid with sight words written in each square. Have students hop to each square and say the sight word aloud. - Sight Word Bingo
Create bingo cards with sight words. Call out the sight words and have students mark them on their cards. The first student to get bingo wins a small prize.
