Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they know about reading. Explain that some words are easy to learn by sight, and these are called sight words. Show them a few examples like 'a', 'I', and 'the' written on flashcards. Mention that they will be learning new sight words today with a fun song. - Video Time! (10 mins)
Play the Jack Hartmann Sight Words video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xi8U7bCOm6c). Encourage students to sing along and do the actions with Jack. Pause the video after each set of sight words to review. - Sight Word Practice (10 mins)
After watching the video, write the sight words from the video on a whiteboard or large paper (how, had, there, their, they, were, have, from, each, word, said, when). Point to each word and have the students say it together. Then, point to the letters in each word and have the students spell it out together. - Sight Word Game (10 mins)
Play a simple game to reinforce sight word recognition. For example, 'Sight Word Bingo' or 'Sight Word Hopscotch' can be used. Create bingo cards with the sight words from the video. Call out the words and have the students mark them on their cards. For hopscotch, write the sight words in chalk on the ground and have the students hop to the correct word as it's called out. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the sight words learned during the lesson. Ask students which word was their favorite and why. Encourage them to look for these sight words in books and around the classroom.
Interactive Exercises
- Sight Word Flashcards
Create flashcards with the sight words from the video. Show the flashcards to the students and have them say the word aloud. You can also have them spell the word. - Sight Word Drawing
Have students draw a picture that represents one of the sight words. For example, they could draw a house for 'there'.
