Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about reading. Ask if they know any words by sight. Explain that some words are called 'sight words' and that we're going to learn some new ones today. Introduce Jack Hartmann and tell them we will be singing along with him to learn sight words. - Video Viewing (10 mins)
Play the Jack Hartmann sight word video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XChcUZHW_SM). The first time, encourage students to watch and listen. The second time, have them spell and say the words along with Jack. The third time, encourage them to spell and say the word independently. - Sight Word Practice (10 mins)
Write each sight word from the video on individual index cards. Hold up each card and have the students say the word together. Then, spell the word together. Repeat this process several times. - Sight Word Game (10 mins)
Scatter the sight word cards on the floor. Call out a sight word, and have the students jump to that card. You can also have students take turns calling out the sight word. - Wrap-Up (5 mins)
Review the sight words learned. Ask students to share their favorite word and why. Encourage them to look for these words in books they read at home or in the classroom.
Interactive Exercises
- Sight Word Hopscotch
Create a hopscotch grid with each square containing a sight word from the video. Have students hop through the grid, saying each word as they land on it. - Sight Word Flashcards
