Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to recognize and pronounce the sight words: which, what, where, will, about, up, one, them, then, many, and some.
- Students will be able to spell the sight words with prompting.
- Students will understand that sight words are words they can learn to read quickly.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about reading. Introduce the concept of 'sight words' as words we can learn to recognize quickly, like their names. Briefly discuss why knowing sight words is helpful for reading. - Video Time! (5 mins)
Play the Jack Hartmann sight word video. Encourage students to sing along and follow the words on the screen. Pause after the first verse to reinforce what a sight word is and how helpful they can be in the future. - Word Practice (10 mins)
Focus on 2-3 sight words from the video (e.g., 'what', 'up', 'one'). Write each word on a large index card. **Activity 1: Word Chants:** Say the word together as a class several times. Then, spell the word aloud, repeating each letter. Finally, say the word again. **Activity 2: Find the Word:** Hide the word cards around the room. Have students search for the cards and bring them back. When a student finds a card, have them say the word aloud. - Sight Word Game (5 mins)
**Game: Sight Word Hopscotch:** Draw a simple hopscotch grid on the floor. Write one sight word in each square. Have students hop through the grid, saying the word in each square as they land on it. - Wrap Up (5 mins)
Review the sight words learned during the lesson. Ask students to share their favorite sight word and why. Remind them that learning sight words helps them become better readers!
Interactive Exercises
- Sight Word Flashcards
Create flashcards with the sight words. Show the cards to the students and have them say the word aloud. Gradually increase the speed at which you show the cards. - Writing Practice
Provide students with worksheets where they can practice writing the sight words. Encourage them to say the word as they write it.
