  • Sight Word Recognition
  • Phonological Awareness (letter sounds)
  • Print Awareness
  • Vocabulary Development

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to recognize and pronounce at least 3 of the sight words introduced in the video.
  • Students will be able to identify some of the letters used to spell the sight words.
  • Students will actively participate in singing and spelling along with the video.

Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about words and reading. Ask them if they know any words by sight (e.g., their name). Explain that some words we learn to read just by seeing them a lot, and these are called sight words.
  • Video Viewing (10 mins)
Play the Jack Hartmann sight word video. Encourage students to sing along and follow the instructions in the video (spell and say the words).
  • Word Practice (10 mins)
After the video, write each sight word on a whiteboard or large paper. Go through each word, saying it together as a class. Have students spell the word out loud with you. Use hand motions to reinforce the spelling (e.g., write the letter in the air as you say it).
  • Sight Word Game (10 mins)
Play a simple game to reinforce sight word recognition. For example, 'Sight Word Hop': Write the sight words on pieces of paper and place them on the floor. Call out a sight word and have students hop to that word. Another option: 'Sight Word Flashcards': Show flashcards of the sight words and have students say the word aloud.
  • Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the sight words learned during the lesson. Ask students which sight word was their favorite and why. Encourage them to look for these words in books they read at home.
