  • Students will be able to sing along to the sight word song.

Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about reading. Ask if they know any words by sight. Explain that some words are 'sight words' and we learn to know them just by looking at them!
  • Video Time (5 mins)
Play the Jack Hartmann Sight Words video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrbM1B4w_i8). Encourage students to sing along and follow the words on the screen.
  • Word Practice (10 mins)
After the video, focus on 3-4 sight words from the song (e.g., over, did, down). Write these words on the board or use flashcards. Practice spelling each word together, then saying the word repeatedly. Use actions to represent each word, if possible (e.g., reaching 'over' something, pretending to 'dig' like you 'did' something, pointing 'down').
  • Sight Word Hunt (5 mins)
Hide flashcards with the sight words around the room. Have students find the words and say them aloud when they find them. Then spell the word aloud as a group.
  • Wrap Up (5 mins)
Sing the sight word song one more time as a class. Review the sight words learned. Encourage students to practice these words at home.

Interactive Exercises

  • Word Building
Provide students with letter blocks or magnetic letters. Call out a sight word and have students build the word using the letters.
  • Sight Word Hopscotch
Create a hopscotch grid with sight words in each square. Students hop to each square and say the sight word.
