Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify the correct order of events in a short story.
- Students will be able to retell a simple story using sequence words like 'first,' 'next,' and 'last.'
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students if they know what it means to put things in order. Ask for examples, like lining up toys or getting dressed. Explain that today they will be learning to put stories in order. - Video Viewing (5 mins)
Play the 'Sequencing Stories - What happens next?' video. Remind students to watch carefully and listen to what happens first, next, and last in each story. - Story Retelling (10 mins)
Choose one of the stories from the video (e.g., 'Breakfast Surprise'). Ask students: 'What happened first? What happened next? What happened last?' Guide them to retell the story in the correct order. - Sequencing Activity (10 mins)
Provide students with simple picture cards representing events from a story (e.g., washing a car - muddy car, washing with sponge, clean car). Have them arrange the cards in the correct order and then retell the story. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the concept of sequencing. Ask students what they learned about putting stories in order. Reinforce the use of words like 'first,' 'next,' and 'last.'
Interactive Exercises
- Picture Sequencing
Give each student a set of 3-4 picture cards depicting a simple sequence (e.g., planting a seed). Have them arrange the cards in order and explain what's happening in each picture, using 'first, 'next,' and 'last'. - Act It Out!
Choose a short story from the video (or a simple one the students know) and have the class act it out. Assign different students to act out each step in the story, emphasizing the order of events.
