Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students if they know what it means for two words to be 'the same.' Introduce the idea that different words can sometimes mean the same thing. Tell them that you will watch a video about synonyms. - Video Viewing (5 mins)
Play the Homeschool Pop video 'Synonyms for Kids.' Encourage children to pay attention to the examples of synonyms. - Discussion (5 mins)
After the video, ask the students what synonyms are, according to the video. Review some of the examples of synonyms from the video (angry/mad, seat/chair, many/lots, smile/grin, sleep/nap, warm/hot, shop/store). - Interactive Activity: Synonym Matching Game (10 mins)
Prepare cards with words and their synonyms (e.g., 'happy' and 'glad', 'big' and 'large', 'small' and 'little'). Have students match the cards to find the synonym pairs. Guide the students. - Synonym Story Time (10 mins)
Tell a short story using simple words. Pause and ask the students if they can think of a synonym for a word you used. For example, 'The little dog ran quickly.' Can anyone think of another word for 'little'? (small) Or another word for 'quickly'? (fast)
Interactive Exercises
- Synonym Scavenger Hunt
Hide pictures of objects around the room. Have the students find the pictures and then shout out a synonym for the object. For example, if they find a picture of a car, they could say 'automobile'. - Synonym Drawing
Call out a word, such as 'happy'. Have each student draw a picture that represents a synonym (e.g., 'glad', 'joyful').
