- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students if they know any words that mean the same thing. For example, 'What's another word for happy?' Encourage students to share their ideas. Introduce the concept of synonyms as words that mean the same or almost the same. - Video Time! (5 mins)
Watch the 'SYNONYMS for Kids' video by Smile and Learn - English. Explain that Hippo and Mouse will help us learn about synonyms. - Discussion Time (5 mins)
After watching the video, review what Hippo and Mouse taught us about synonyms. Remind students that synonyms are words that mean the same or almost the same. Ask them to remember some of the synonyms they heard in the video (e.g., big, huge, gigantic). - Synonym Game (10 mins)
Play a simple synonym game. Say a word and have the children suggest synonyms. Examples: happy (glad, joyful), small (little, tiny), big (large, huge), sad (unhappy). - Drawing & Labeling (10 mins)
Have each student draw a picture of something (e.g., a happy face, a big tree, a small ant). Then, help them label their picture with the original word AND a synonym. For example, 'Happy Face' and then below it, 'Glad Face'.
