Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about categories. Ask if they know what a category is. Explain that categories are groups of things that are alike. Give a simple example like colors or toys.
  • Video Viewing (3 mins)
Play the 'Learning with Yaya - Categories' video. Encourage students to sing along and pay attention to the different categories presented.
  • Category Discussion (7 mins)
After watching the video, review the categories presented: Animals, Clothing, Body Parts, Shapes, Numbers, Toys, Food, Vehicles, and Instruments. Show pictures of items from each category and ask students to identify the category.
  • Sorting Activity (10 mins)
Prepare a set of picture cards or real objects representing items from the categories featured in the video. Have students sort the items into labeled bins or designated areas for each category (e.g., an 'Animal' bin, a 'Clothing' bin, etc.).
  • Extension Activity: Category Creation (5 mins)
Encourage students to create their own categories, such as 'Things that are red' or 'Things we use at school.' Have them brainstorm items that belong in their chosen category and share with the class.

Interactive Exercises

  • Category Charades
Students act out items from different categories, and their classmates guess the item and the category.
  • Category Drawing
Give each student a category (e.g., food) and ask them to draw as many items as they can that belong to that category.
