- Students will be able to identify examples of nouns in their environment.
- Students will be able to categorize nouns into person, place, thing, animal, or idea categories.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they know about words. Explain that words help us name things. Introduce the word 'noun' and explain that it's a special word that names people, places, things, and animals. Show pictures of a person, a place, a thing, and an animal to provide visual aids. - Watch the Noun Rap Video (5 mins)
Play the 'Noun Rap | Parts of Speech Song' video by Jack Hartmann. Encourage students to sing along and dance to the music. Point out the different types of nouns mentioned in the song as they appear. - Discussion and Examples (10 mins)
After the video, review the definition of a noun. Ask students to give examples of each type of noun (person, place, thing, animal, idea). Write their examples on a whiteboard or large paper. - Noun Scavenger Hunt (10 mins)
Conduct a classroom scavenger hunt. Ask students to find examples of nouns in the classroom. For example: 'Find a person!' (student, teacher), 'Find a place!' (desk, rug), 'Find a thing!' (book, crayon), 'Find an animal!' (picture of an animal). Have them bring the item to you and name it. - Noun Sorting Activity (10 mins)
Prepare a chart with headings: Person, Place, Thing, Animal, Idea. Show pictures of different nouns (e.g., doctor, school, ball, dog, friendship). Ask students to help you sort the pictures under the correct headings. Discuss why each picture belongs in its category. - Wrap Up and Review (5 mins)
Review the definition of a noun and the different categories. Sing the 'Noun Rap' song again to reinforce learning. Ask students to share their favorite noun they learned today.
Interactive Exercises
- Noun Charades
Write different nouns on slips of paper (e.g., teacher, park, ball, cat). Have students take turns acting out the noun without speaking. The other students guess what noun they are acting out. - Draw a Noun
