Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about words. Introduce the idea that some words name things. Ask for examples of things they can see in the classroom. - Video Viewing (5 mins)
Play the "All About Nouns" video from FreeSchool. Encourage students to listen carefully for what a noun is. - Discussion (5 mins)
After the video, ask students what a noun is. Reiterate that nouns name people, places, things, or ideas. Give simple examples. - Noun Hunt (10 mins)
Have students look around the classroom and identify nouns. Call on students to share their findings (e.g., "I see a chair!" "I see a book!"). Write the nouns on the board. - Sorting Activity (10 mins)
Prepare picture cards of people, places, and things. As a class, sort the cards into categories. Discuss each picture and why it belongs in its category. (e.g. Is a dog a person, a place or a thing?) - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review what a noun is and ask students to name their favorite noun. End with a song or rhyme about nouns (optional).
Interactive Exercises
- Noun Scavenger Hunt
Give each student a worksheet with pictures of a person, a place, and a thing. Have them find and draw an example of each in the classroom. - Noun Charades
