Key Concepts

  • There are twelve months in a year.
  • Each month has a name and a specific order.
  • Calendars help us keep track of the months and days.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to name all twelve months of the year in order.
  • Students will be able to identify the position of a given month in the year (e.g., January is the first month).
  • Students will be able to recall a fact about at least three different months (e.g. days in the month).

Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students if they know what a calendar is and what it's used for. Introduce the video and explain that they will be learning about the months of the year.
  • Video Viewing (8 mins)
Play the 'What are the Months of the Year?' video from the Miacademy Learning Channel. Encourage students to repeat the names of the months as they are presented in the video.
  • Discussion and Review (10 mins)
After the video, review the months of the year with the students. Ask them to repeat the names again and discuss any interesting facts they learned from the video (e.g., number of days in each month). Use flashcards with the month names to aid in recall.
  • Activity: Month Order Game (12 mins)
Divide the students into small groups. Give each group a set of cards with the names of the months written on them. Have them work together to put the cards in the correct order. The first group to correctly order the months wins!
  • Wrap-up (5 mins)
Summarize the lesson by reiterating the names of the months. Encourage students to practice saying the months of the year at home. Preview the upcoming lesson.

Interactive Exercises

  • Month Sorting Activity
Provide students with pictures representing different seasons or holidays. Have them sort the pictures under the corresponding month names.
