Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about the alphabet. Introduce the concept of consonants and vowels, explaining that today they will focus on learning new consonants. Show the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHQot6t-50M). - Letter Exploration (15 mins)
After watching the video, review each letter individually. Write the letter on the board and say its sound. Show a picture of an object that starts with that letter, like 'hat' for H. Have the students repeat the letter, sound, and word. Do this for each letter: H, J, K, L, and M. - Sound Sorting (10 mins)
Prepare picture cards of various objects. Some should start with H, J, K, L, or M, and others with different letters. Have students sort the cards into groups based on the beginning sound. For example, a card with a picture of a 'house' goes under the 'H' group. - Word Building (10 mins)
Use letter manipulatives (magnetic letters, letter tiles) to build simple words that start with the target consonants, such as 'ham', 'jam', 'kit', 'lap', and 'map'. Focus on sounding out each letter as you build the word. Students can work in pairs or small groups. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the letters and sounds learned in the lesson. Ask students to name other words that start with H, J, K, L, or M. Emphasize the importance of practicing these sounds to improve reading and writing skills.
Interactive Exercises
- Consonant Sound Bingo
Create bingo cards with pictures of items starting with H, J, K, L, and M. Call out the letter sounds (e.g., '/h/'). Students mark the picture on their card if it starts with that sound. The first student to get bingo wins a small prize. - Letter Scavenger Hunt
Hide large cut-out letters (H, J, K, L, M) around the classroom. Have students find the letters and bring them back to a designated area. As they find each letter, have them say the letter name and sound.
