Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students if they know what 'opposites' are. Have them give a few examples. Explain that today, they will learn a special word for opposites: 'antonyms'. - Video Viewing (5 mins)
Play the 'What are Antonyms?' video from Miacademy Learning Channel. Encourage students to pay attention to the examples of antonyms provided. - Discussion (5 mins)
After the video, ask students what an antonym is. Review some of the examples from the video (up/down, big/small, etc.). - Antonym Matching Game (10 mins)
Prepare cards with pictures or words of common antonyms (e.g., a picture of a sun and a picture of a moon, the word 'happy' and the word 'sad'). Have students work individually or in pairs to match the antonym pairs. - Sentence Creation (10 mins)
Write a simple sentence on the board, such as 'The cat is big.' Ask students to come up with a sentence using the antonym of 'big' (small): 'The mouse is small.' Repeat with other simple sentences and antonyms. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the definition of antonyms one last time. Ask students to share their favorite antonym pairs they learned today.
