Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by introducing the concept of compound words. Ask students if they've ever heard of words made up of two smaller words. Tell them they are going to watch a video to learn more! - Video Viewing (7 mins)
Play the Homeschool Pop video 'Compound Words for Kids'. Encourage students to pay attention to the definition and examples of compound words. - Discussion (5 mins)
After watching the video, have a class discussion about compound words. Ask students what they learned and what examples they remember from the video. - Activity: Compound Word Creation (10 mins)
Divide students into pairs or small groups. Provide each group with a set of picture cards or word cards featuring simple, one-syllable words. Have them work together to create compound words by combining two cards. For example: 'sun' + 'flower' = 'sunflower'. - Wrap-up (3 mins)
Review the definition of compound words and ask students to share some of the compound words they created. Reinforce that compound words are simply two smaller words that join to make a new, bigger word!
Interactive Exercises
- Compound Word Matching
Create matching cards with individual words that can be combined to make compound words. Students match the cards to form the compound words (e.g., 'sun' card matches with 'flower' card). - Compound Word Hunt
Hide pictures of objects that represent the parts of compound words around the classroom. Students find the pictures and combine them to 'discover' compound words.
