Cracking the Code: Onset and Rime Fun!
Lesson Description
Video Resource
Key Concepts
- Onset: The beginning consonant sound of a word.
- Rime: The vowel and any consonants that follow the vowel in a word.
- Blending: Combining the onset and rime to form a word.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify the onset and rime in simple words.
- Students will be able to blend the onset and rime to pronounce words.
- Students will be able to generate words with the same rime.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about words. Ask if they've ever noticed how some words sound alike at the end. Introduce the terms 'onset' and 'rime' in a kid-friendly way: 'Onset is the beginning sound, and rime is the rest of the word!' - Video Viewing (5 mins)
Watch the 'English Language - Grade 1: Onset and Rime' video. Encourage students to listen carefully for examples of onset and rime. - Guided Practice (10 mins)
After the video, write some words on the board (e.g., cat, bat, hat, pig, wig, dig). For each word, ask students to identify the onset and rime. Model the first few examples. Then, have students work in pairs to identify the onset and rime in the remaining words. - Independent Practice (10 mins)
Provide students with a worksheet containing a list of words. Ask them to write the onset and rime for each word. Alternatively, use flashcards with simple CVC words and have students verbally identify the onset and rime. - Rime Time! (10 mins)
Choose a rime (e.g., -at). Ask students to brainstorm as many words as they can that end with that rime (e.g., cat, bat, hat, sat, mat). Write the words on the board. Repeat with another rime (e.g., -in). - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the concepts of onset and rime. Ask students to give examples of words and identify their onset and rime. Preview the next lesson.
Interactive Exercises
- Onset-Rime Matching Game
Create cards with onsets and rimes. Students match the onset cards to the correct rime cards to form words. For example, a 'c' card matches with an '-at' card to form 'cat'. - Clap the Onset!
Say a word. Students clap once for the onset and twice for the rime. Example: 'Dog' - one clap for /d/, two claps for /og/.
