Lesson Description
Video Resource
Grade 1: Math Lesson #13 Identifying a Triangle and the Number of its sides and angles.
The Eagle's Nest - Our Online Classroom
Key Concepts
- A triangle has three sides.
- A triangle has three angles (corners).
- Triangles can be different sizes and orientations.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify triangles in their environment.
- Students will be able to state that a triangle has three sides and three angles.
- Students will be able to differentiate triangles from other shapes like circles and squares.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by watching the YouTube video: 'Grade 1: Math Lesson #13 Identifying a Triangle and the Number of its sides and angles.' Ask students if they have ever heard of a triangle. Briefly discuss shapes they already know (circle, square). - Triangle Discovery (10 mins)
After watching the video, review what a triangle is. Emphasize that a triangle has three sides and three corners (angles). Have students draw a triangle on a piece of paper. Then, have students count the sides and corners together. - Shape Hunt (10 mins)
Conduct a 'Triangle Treasure Hunt' in the classroom. Ask students to look around and find as many triangles as they can. When they find one, have them point to it and say, 'That's a triangle!' and count the sides and corners. - Triangle Art (10 mins)
Provide students with construction paper and scissors. Have them cut out different sizes and colors of triangles. Then, have them glue the triangles onto another piece of paper to create a picture. Encourage them to use triangles to make other shapes (like the dollhouse roof in the video). - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review what they learned about triangles. Ask: How many sides does a triangle have? How many angles does it have? What are some places you can find triangles? Play a quick game of 'Triangle, Circle, Square' where you call out a shape and students must point to something in the room that is that shape.
Interactive Exercises
- Shape Sorting
Provide students with a set of shape cutouts (circles, squares, triangles). Have them sort the shapes into groups, explaining why each shape belongs in its group. - Triangle Building
Give students straws or craft sticks and have them use these materials to build triangles. They can also use playdough to form the shapes.
Discussion Questions
- What makes a triangle different from a circle or a square?
- Can you think of any real-life objects that are shaped like triangles?
Skills Developed
- Shape recognition
- Counting
- Spatial reasoning
- Observation Skills
