Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify when an object is divided into two equal halves.
- Students will be able to divide simple objects (with assistance) into two approximately equal halves.
- Students will understand that two halves make a whole.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what it means to share something fairly. Discuss times they have shared things with friends or family. Introduce the idea of cutting something in half so everyone gets the same amount. Tell them that today, they will watch a video about a teacher who cuts fruits and veggies in half! - Video Viewing (7 mins)
Play the YouTube video: 'Grade 1: Math Lesson # 18 Dividing A Solid In Half'. Encourage students to pay close attention to how the teacher divides each item and what she says about the sizes of the pieces. - Discussion and Activity (10 mins)
After watching the video, lead a discussion about what they saw. Use discussion questions below. Then, provide students with playdough or pre-cut paper shapes (circles, squares). Have them practice dividing the shapes into what they think are equal halves. Provide guidance and feedback as needed. - Wrap-up (3 mins)
Review the key concept: When we cut something in half, we make two pieces that are the same size. Ask them to draw a picture of something they would like to cut in half to share with a friend.
Interactive Exercises
- Playdough Halves
Give each student a ball of playdough. Have them roll it into a snake and then cut it in half. Ask them if the two pieces are the same size. If not, can they adjust them to make them more equal? - Paper Shape Cutting
Provide pre-cut paper circles and squares. Have students fold them in half and then cut along the fold line. Discuss whether the two pieces are equal.
Discussion Questions
- What does it mean when something is cut in half?
- How do you know if two pieces are equal?
- Can you think of other things we could cut in half?
- Why is it important for the two pieces to be about the same size when we cut something in half?
