The Eagle's Nest - Our Online Classroom
Key Concepts
- Ordinal Numbers (First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth)
- Position (Next, Between, Last)
- Counting in Order
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify ordinal positions up to sixth.
- Students will be able to use the terms 'next,' 'between,' and 'last' to describe the position of objects in a sequence.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by welcoming students and introducing the concept of ordinal numbers. Explain that today they will be learning about 'first,' 'second,' 'third,' 'fourth,' 'fifth,' and 'sixth' using a bird-themed example. Briefly review counting from 1 to 6. - Video Viewing (7 mins)
Play the YouTube video 'Grade 1: Math Lesson #22 Identifying Ordinal Position to Sixth.' Encourage students to watch carefully and listen for the ordinal numbers and position words used in the video. - Discussion (5 mins)
After the video, engage students in a discussion about the birds and their positions. Ask questions to reinforce understanding. For example: 'Which bird was first?' 'Which bird was second?' 'Which bird was last?' 'Which bird was between the chickadee and the woodpecker?' - Interactive Exercise: Line Up! (10 mins)
Have students line up (either physically or using objects like toys). Then, ask questions like: 'Who is first in line?' 'Who is third in line?' 'Who is last in line?' 'Who is between [name] and [name]?' Encourage students to use ordinal numbers and position words in their answers. You can use different themes, like lining up favorite animals or colors. - Wrap Up (3 mins)
Review the ordinal numbers from first to sixth one last time. Have the students repeat them together as a group. Remind them that ordinal numbers tell us the order or position of things.
Interactive Exercises
- Coloring Page
Provide a coloring page with six objects (e.g., cars, animals, shapes) in a row. Instruct students to color the 'first' object red, the 'second' object blue, the 'third' object green, the 'fourth' object yellow, the 'fifth' object purple, and the 'sixth' object orange. - Toy Parade
Have students line up their toys and describe the position of each toy using ordinal numbers (e.g., 'The teddy bear is first,' 'The race car is third,' 'The doll is sixth').
