  • Adding one to a number

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to count from 1 to 20.
  • Students will be able to arrange numbers from 1 to 20 in the correct order.
  • Students will be able to add one to any number between 0 and 9.

Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by counting from 1 to 20 as a class. Review what 'ordering' means, relating it to putting things in a line from smallest to biggest.
  • Ordering Numbers Activity (10 mins)
Watch the video from 0:12-2:55. Pause the video at each number switch. Ask students to identify the incorrect numbers and explain why they are out of order. Have them verbally correct the order before resuming the video.
  • Ordering Teens Practice (5 mins)
Watch the video from 2:55-3:40. Pause the video after each number is placed. Have the students predict the next number in the sequence.
  • Adding One More (10 mins)
Watch the video from 3:40-5:55. Explain that adding one is like counting one step further. Use a number line (draw one on the board) to visually demonstrate adding one. Practice using flashcards as shown in the video from 5:55-7:00.
  • Number Line Game (5 mins)
Watch the video from 7:00-end. Play a class game using a number line on the board. Call out a number and have students raise their hand to say what is one more. For example: "I'm on number 4, what is one more?" (Answer: 5)

Interactive Exercises

  • Number Card Sort
Give each student a set of number cards (1-20). Have them mix up the cards and then put them back in order. For an extra challenge, have them close their eyes while a partner switches two cards, and then identify the mistake.
  • One More Jump
Use a large number line on the floor. Call out a number and have a student stand on that number. Then, have them jump one space forward and say the new number.
