Odd Numbers Song! Learn by Singing!
The Eagle's Nest - Our Online Classroom
Key Concepts
- Odd numbers
- The digits 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9
- Identifying odd numbers based on their last digit
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify odd numbers between 1 and 20.
- Students will be able to recognize that odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about numbers. Briefly discuss the concept of even and odd numbers (without going into too much detail about even numbers yet, focus on priming their knowledge). Introduce the 'Odd Numbers Song' video. - Video Time! (3 mins)
Play the 'Odd Numbers Song!' video. Encourage students to sing along and clap to the beat. - Discuss and Define (5 mins)
After the video, ask students what the song was about. Reinforce that odd numbers are numbers that end in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9. Write these digits on the board. - Odd Number Hunt (7 mins)
Write a series of numbers on the board (e.g., 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23). Have students identify the odd numbers by circling them or raising their hands. Explain why each circled number is odd (ends in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9). - Practice with Manipulatives (10 mins)
Give each student a set of counters (e.g., buttons, blocks). Have them create sets of different numbers (e.g., 3 counters, 7 counters, 12 counters). Ask them if each set is odd or even. Guide them to understand that odd numbers will always have one counter left over when trying to make pairs.
Interactive Exercises
- Odd Number Line Game
Create a number line from 1 to 20 on the floor with tape. Call out a number. Students jump to that number. If it's an odd number, they shout 'Odd!' If it's an even number (review this concept briefly), they say nothing. Repeat with different numbers. - Odd Number Flashcards
Show flashcards with numbers on them. Students say 'Odd' if the number is odd and stay silent if it is even.
