Grade 1: Math Lesson #51 Identifying and Locating Numbers On The Hundred Chart
The Eagle's Nest - Our Online Classroom
Key Concepts
- Number recognition (1-100)
- Using a hundred chart to locate numbers
- Identifying numbers that are one more, one less, ten more, and ten less than a given number
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify numbers between 1 and 100 on a hundred chart.
- Students will be able to locate a specific number on a hundred chart.
- Students will be able to determine the numbers that are one more, one less, ten more, and ten less than a given number using a hundred chart.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by greeting the students and introducing the topic: exploring numbers on a hundred chart. Briefly explain what a hundred chart is and how it helps us find numbers. - Finding Numbers (10 mins)
Show a hundred chart (either a large classroom chart or individual printed charts). Point to various numbers and ask students to identify them. Play 'Guess the Number': Cover a number with a block or marker and ask students to guess which number is hidden. Repeat this several times. - One More, One Less (10 mins)
Choose a number on the hundred chart. Ask students to identify the number that is one more and the number that is one less. Repeat this with different numbers. Emphasize the pattern of moving right for one more and left for one less (within the same row). - Ten More, Ten Less (10 mins)
Choose a number on the hundred chart. Ask students to identify the number that is ten more and the number that is ten less. Explain that moving down one row is ten more and moving up one row is ten less. Repeat this with different numbers. - Hundred Chart Game (10 mins)
Have the students play the 'Cover the Number' game with a partner. One student covers a number, and the other student has to guess it. They can give each other clues like, 'It's one more than 25' or 'It's ten less than 42'. - Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review what was learned during the lesson. Ask students to share what they enjoyed most about exploring the hundred chart.
Interactive Exercises
- Cover the Number
Students work in pairs. One student covers a number on the hundred chart, and the other student has to guess the number. They can give clues like 'It is bigger than 50' or 'It is smaller than 30'. - Number Hunt
Call out a number, and have the students point to it on their hundred chart as quickly as they can.
