Key Concepts

  • Skip counting by 2s
  • Skip counting by 10s
  • Grouping objects into sets of ten

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to skip count by 2s to 24.
  • Students will be able to skip count by 10s to 120.
  • Students will be able to group objects into sets of ten and count the groups.

Educator Instructions

  • Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by welcoming the students to the 'beach' (real or imaginary!). Review the concept of skip counting and introduce the idea of counting by 2s and 10s. Briefly mention that they will be using shells (or other objects) to help them count.
  • Counting by 2s (10 mins)
Sing the skip counting by 2s song together (as in the video). Use shells (or other objects) to visually demonstrate counting by 2s. Start with 2 shells, then add 2 more, and so on, while saying the numbers aloud (2, 4, 6, 8...). Practice counting to 24.
  • Counting by 10s (10 mins)
Explain that we will now count by 10s. Use the shells to make groups of 10. Count each group as 10, then count all the groups together (10, 20, 30...). Continue to 100 or 120. Sing the skip counting by 10s song. (Ten, Twenty, Thirty, Forty, Fifty, Sixty, Seventy, Eighty, Ninety, One Hundred, One Hundred Ten, One Hundred Twenty)
  • Practice and Application (10 mins)
Provide students with more shells (or other manipulatives) and have them practice grouping them into sets of 2 and 10. Ask them to count the sets and write down the numbers.
  • Wrap-up (5 mins)
Review the concepts of skip counting by 2s and 10s. Ask students to share what they learned and how they can use skip counting in their everyday lives. (e.g. Counting pairs of socks, counting allowance in dimes)

Interactive Exercises

  • Shell Grouping Game
Provide each student with a set of shells (or other objects). Call out a number (e.g., 20). Students must quickly group the shells into sets of 10 (or 2) to reach that number.
  • Number Line Hop
Use a number line (drawn on the board or floor). Have students hop along the number line, counting by 2s or 10s.
