The Eagle's Nest - Our Online Classroom
Key Concepts
- Squares
- Halves
- Equal Parts
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify a square.
- Students will be able to divide a square into two equal halves.
- Students will be able to describe the parts as 'halves' or 'half of'.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they know about squares. What do they look like? Can they draw one? Then, introduce the idea of sharing equally. What does it mean if you share something with a friend and each of you gets half? - Video Time (10 mins)
Watch the YouTube video: 'Grade 1:Math Lesson #67 Dividing A Square In Halves (Includes Lesson)'. Pay attention to how the square is divided and what it means to have a half. - Square Craft (15 mins)
Give each student a square piece of paper. Have them fold the square in half, making sure the edges line up perfectly. Once folded, ask them to describe what they see. How many parts are there? Are the parts the same size? Explain that each part is a 'half' of the square. - Creative Halves (10 mins)
Let students decorate each half of their square differently. They can use crayons, markers, or stickers. This helps reinforce the idea that even though the halves look different, they are still equal parts of the whole square. - Wrap Up (5 mins)
Review what they learned. What is a square? What are halves? Can they think of other things that can be divided in half?
Interactive Exercises
- Sharing Game
Give students a pile of small objects (e.g., blocks, counters). Have them practice dividing the objects in half and sharing them equally with a partner.
