- Students will be able to identify and draw line segments.
- Students will be able to create simple shapes using straight lines.
Educator Instructions
- Introduction (5 mins)
Begin by asking students what they already know about rulers. Show them a ruler and ask what they think it's used for. Briefly discuss the concept of straight lines versus wiggly lines. - Video Viewing (7 mins)
Play the YouTube video "Grade 1: Math Lesson #72 Using A Ruler To Draw A Line Segment." Encourage students to pay close attention to how the teacher uses the ruler to draw straight lines. - Practice Drawing Lines (10 mins)
Distribute rulers and paper to each student. Have them practice drawing straight lines between two dots. Emphasize the importance of holding the ruler tightly to prevent wiggly lines. Have them practice drawing wiggly lines as well without a ruler. - Shape Creation (10 mins)
Guide students in creating simple shapes like squares, triangles, and rectangles using their rulers. Encourage them to experiment and see what other shapes they can make. Discuss the number of sides each shape has. - Alphabet Dot-to-Dot (8 mins)
Provide students with a simple alphabet dot-to-dot worksheet (A to D is sufficient). Have them use their rulers to connect the dots in the correct order to reveal the shape (star). This reinforces both ruler skills and letter recognition.
Interactive Exercises
- Wiggly vs. Straight Line Challenge
Have students try drawing a line without a ruler and see how wiggly it is. Then, have them use a ruler and compare the difference. Discuss why the ruler helps create a straight line. - Shape Scavenger Hunt
Have students look around the classroom for objects that have straight lines. Discuss what shapes they see in those objects.
