Work through several example problems together on the board, using coins (real or drawn) to represent the numbers. For example: 17 + 8. First, represent 17 with 1 dime and 7 pennies. Represent 8 with 8 pennies. Then, ask: 'Can we make a ten?' Group 3 pennies from the 8 with the 7 pennies to make a ten (dime). Replace the 10 pennies with one dime.
